To apply for financial aid, a student must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at https://fafsa.ed.gov and include the Texas State University school code – 003615.

Not be in default on a federal student loan. Not owe a refund on any federal financial aid grant. Have a high school diploma, GED, or completion of high school in an approved homeschool setting. Have a valid Social Security number.

For students, the major difference between federal and state financial aid is that the federal government offers a standardized set of awards and has an equally standardized application procedure for getting them.

At Texas State University, the total cost is $27,449 for in-state students and $39,689 for out-of-state students.

To increase access to higher education, Texas State University offers the Bobcat Promise. This program guarantees free tuition and mandatory fees for 15 credit hours per semester to new entering freshmen with a FAFSA income that does not exceed $50,000.

Federal Pell Grant

The federal *Pell Grant is offered to students based on significant financial need. For 2023-2024, the maximum award is expected to be $7,395. Students who have received a bachelor's degree or are in a graduate program are not eligible for a Pell Grant.

There are no FAFSA income limits, meaning there's nothing stopping even the richest college students from submitting a FAFSA. Thanks to the so-called "Simplified FAFSA" unveiled for the 2024-25 academic year, filling out the form is faster and easier than ever.
